If you think Brian is an odd name for a tripod, you’re clearly not familiar with this iconoclastic British tripod maker’s products. 3 Legged Thing is based in Stagsden, Bedfordshire, in a converted chicken shed and the original Brian was its first ever tripod. Eventually it was retired in 2015 after four generations but, we’re told, it was missed every day thereafter – hence its re-introduction as part of 3 Legged Thing’s ‘Punks’ range.
Refined and improved, Brian is a travel tripod with a number of innovative features, including a removable leg which can then be used as a monopod and a two-section centre column. This works with the five-section legs to provide a maximum working height of an impressive 1.87m, but a folded down length of just 41cm. It’s light, too, weighing just 1.45kg. For low-angle shots, the centre column can be removed and reversed and the legs extended to their maximum angle of 80 degrees.
Travel tripods like Brian are characterised by legs that fold up around the centre column and enclose the tripod head, creating a smaller folded size and one that’s easier to carry and stow. Brian’s legs have rubber ‘Bootz’ feet, but you can swap these out for Heelz, Clawz, and Stilettoz attachments, bought separately, to cope with different types of terrain. Also included is an AirHed Neo ballhead with two spirit level bubbles and a drawstring carry bag.
The Punks Brian is available for pre-order from March 12th and goes on sale officially on April 2nd 2018. Buyers get a choice of colours: grey and blue with copper accents, or matte black with accents of British Racing Green
