Sigma has announced a brand new full-frame mirrorless 70-200mm f/2.8 pro telephoto zoom specifically for Sony FE mount and L-mount cameras. It’s a flagship product designed to compete head on with own-brand 70-200mm zooms from Sony and Panasonic but at a much lower price.
The new lens features a host of high-end technologies and design features. It uses a Dual HLA (High-response Linear Actuator) motors for fast, accurate and silent AF, for example, as part of a floating focus system with two focusing groups; these move in opposite directions when focusing to reduce internal movements by half.
The Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS | Sports also has optical stabilisation, claimed to offer a 7.5-stop advantage at 70mm and a 5.5 stop-advantage at 200mm. It has two operational modes: Mode 1 for all types of photography and Mode 2 for panning shots.
The optical formulation includes six FLD elements, SLD elements and three glass aspherical elements to minimize aberrations, and features an internal zoom so that the length and balance of the lens doesn’t change during zooming. This could prove especially useful for gimbal use, and Sigma says its new lens has been designed to minimize focus breathing. It also has an aperture ring, a first for a Sigma Sports lens, and this can be de-clicked for filming.
Overall, thanks to its new streamlined optical design, the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS | Sports is significantly smaller and lighter than Sigma’s existing 70- 200mm F2.8 DG OS HSM Sports lens for DSLRs.
The Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 DG DN OS | Sports is expected to go on sale on December 7 and will cost $1,499/£1499.99
