The Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN | Contemporary is already available in a Sony E-mount version, where it makes a portable and affordable constant aperture standard zoom for Sony’s APS-C cameras. Well now Sigma has launched an X-mount version of this lens, which could be a great option for Fujifilm owners who want to step up to a constant aperture f/2.8 pro-spec lens without the weight and expense of the Fujifilm XF16-55mm.
Opinion
This is where I offer thoughts on developments in photography and video, some of the context behind news stories and industry events, and how these might impact photographers.
Pentax KF is launched… but why?
Pentax has a launched yet another 24MP APS-C DSLR. Normally I’d be celebrating a new DSLR, but with Pentax it’s a different story. For years now, it’s been recyling the same basic 24MP sensor in countless different guises, and even as Pentax fan I have to admit my remaining interest in this brand is waning.
The Zhiyun Smooth 5S smartphone gimbal has a really basic problem
My problem with the Smooth 5S is simple. To balance the phone, you push the phone’s right edge right up against the tilt motor – and this blocks the phone’s mic input. WTF?
Why is Fujifilm torturing us? Do I want the X-H2 or the X-T5? It’s impossible!
Obviously it’s not impossible, but it is quite a difficult choice. Both cameras have Fujifilm’s new 40MP sensor, both cameras have similar technologies and both cameras even cost a similar amount of money.
What I think of the OM System OM-5 and whether we all need a reality check
I’ve just written an OM System OM-5 review on TechRadar, and it made me think a lot about how much change we expect, how much change we need and what we actually value in a camera. Well, what I actually value in a camera, at least.
Is the Fujifilm X-H2 a breakthrough camera?
I actually think it might be. I got an early look at this camera at the Fujifilm House of Photography in London before the official launch and I wrote this hands-on review for Digital Camera World ready for the Fujifilm X-Summit in New York.
Not all video is vlogging
Opinion: I’m currently reviewing the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 6K G2 for Digital Camera World and it’s been an eye-opening experience. It’s reminded me that not every videographer is a vlogger.
Image stabilization and gimbals are not the same
Camera makers often say their in-body stabilization, whether it’s optical stabilization, digital stabilization or both combined, can deliver ‘gimbal-like’ steadiness. That’s sometimes true, up to a point, for a certain style of shooting, but the fact is that stabilization and gimbals are two completely different things that work on two completely different principles.
I like the Nikon Z30 more than I thought I would
When I attended the Nikon press briefing for its new, affordable vlogging camera, I was not convinced. I thought it was a rather lazy and predictable reworking of Nikon’s Z50 and Z fc cameras with essentially the same hardware in a new skin. I haven’t really changed my mind about that, but having actually tried […]
I bought a camera launched five years ago… but why?
I often don’t buy cameras until they are five years old. That’s not because I’m tight with money but more because I’m cautious about how I spend it (oh, maybe that’s being tight with money). I also think that cameras that have been on the market for a few years are both safe buys and […]
